Metaverse: The Virtual Reality

Metaverse can be defined as a world where virtual reality and mixed reality can be accessed through a browser.

Metaverse is similar to video games, where you turn to be a character and explore things in animated levels after levels open after winning. Let’s understand it more easily. It is a virtual world that offers houses, workspaces, shops, and interactions with others. You can have access to everything from your couch, yes, it is a more similar technology to video games.

Since, Facebook announced an investment of $10 billion in the next decade to transform this technology, build a metaverse vision, and replaced its name with Meta, the Metaverse became a household term.

It has continuously been googled and searched, and a lot of content has been written and read on it by millions of people to understand what this technology is, and what it has to offer.

The metaverse concept was first described in the novel, Snow Crash, published in 1992. Several tech companies later developed online communities based on its concept, Second Life was among such communities released in 2003.

The metaverse is considered an internet evolution. It will exist in numerous forms such as online communities, business meetings, and gaming where people will interact and collab through digital facsimiles or have their avatars.

Avatar is a Sanskrit terminology, that means reincarnation. In the metaverse, people will have their avatars. In the metaverse, avatars are used as the appearance of people’s character, through which they can communicate with each other and virtually build a community.

Digital currency is used to buy things in the metaverse, such as clothes, it is similar to weapons and shieldings purchased in video games, and various other items. Users can virtually travel through the metaverse to have fun without having any goal in mind by utilizing the virtual reality headset and controllers.

Internet and Metaverse

Internet is a network spread across the world with billions of computers, and electronic devices connected through millions of servers. Internet users can communicate with each other’s online, they can view and interact with websites, and buy and sell goods and services on e-commerce platforms.

Metaverse depends on the internet to offer its access to users and enable them to interact with each other. The metaverse is a virtual world that imitates similarities to that of the physical world through various technologies such as augmented reality, virtual reality, social media, artificial intelligence, and digital currency.

People can browse through the internet, but people can live in the metaverse. Governments can also exist in the metaverse. For instance, numerous countries have their static presence on various internet communities. The internet penetration has resulted in offering numerous services that are leading to develop the metaverse. 

Metaverse Companies

Facebook, renamed Meta, is not the first Metaverse company but is an important changer in bringing the metaverse to the life. It would not require having a Facebook account to access Metaverse. The company has already sold millions of Oculus VR headgear units that allow navigation through the metaverse.

Epic Games and Microsoft are also two giant tech companies to invest in the technology. Microsoft has planned to release Mesh, based on metaverse technology for Microsoft Teams. Epic Games claimed a stake in the metaverse, in the funding round. It received funding worth $200 million from Sony Group Corp.
