The NBA has a problem and it’s called the Golden State Warriors. The juggernaut of the West swept away the Cavs in the 2018 Finals and are on their way to a 3-peat. While, the rest of the league is playing catch up to pose a realistic threat to them, they went ahead and added 3 times All Star, DeMarcus Cousins for a mid-level exception of $5.2 million for one year. Cousins is considered one of the best Big Men in the league right now, averaging 21.5 points and 11.0 rebounds throughout his career. But, an Achilles tear and his troubling locker room reputation, saw him getting no offers from any team, not even the Pelicans. So, Boogie decided to join four other All Stars residing in the Bay Area and create an invincible team, in theory at least.
While Cousins move is being viewed as his lack of desire in competing and is termed as “weak”. The reality however is quite the contrary. Cousins has to recover from a career threatening Achilles injury and probably won’t be available until the playoffs. And when he does return, he will share the floor with four other All Stars, which means he won’t see much of the ball and won’t average the numbers which we are accustomed to. Cousins is however, well served by the fact that the Warriors don’t need him immediately and he can recover at his own pace. The Warriors culture will also help DeMarcus reform his locker room presence. And when all is said and done, he will have a ring to add to his résumé going into next year’s Free Agency.
