Chancellor Angela Merkel: Germany needs a stable government

Chancellor Angela Merkel in a news conference on Monday told that in order to respond to proposals for reforming the EU and to deal with the uncertain global environment, Germany needs to have a stable government as soon as possible.

Chancellor Angela Merkel speaking after a meeting of her Christian Democrats (CDU) party’s leadership said she would hold meetings with the Social Democrats (SPD), leader of the Social Democrats (SPD), who have agreed under pressure to enter coalition talks with Merkel’s camp after first refusing to do so.

Referring to proposals on the future governance of the currency and economic union by French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, the Chancellor said, “There are European elections in 2019 .. so there is a big expectation that we take positions.”

She also mentioned about the tensions with Russia, relations with the United States and conflict in the Middle East a as factors that meant Germany needed to be “capable of acting”.
