A bill that would have been legalized abortion in the initial 14 weeks of pregnancy have been rejected by the Argentine senate.
With the bill being rejected, the lawmakers now must wait for another year until they can resubmit the abortion legalization bill.
After a long debate, 31 senators voted in favor of the bill while the other 38 rejected.
Argentina only allows abortion if the mother’s health is in danger or if the one pregnant is a victim of rape.
As the voting took place, demonstrators of both sides of the referendum were rallying outside the Argentine parliament.
The bill being rejected brought great amount of joy among the anti-abortion activists. One anti-abortion activist told the Reuters news agency, that this vote showed that Argentina is still a country which represents the family values.
The one’s in favor of abortion, among whom many were dressed in green, showing their support to the cause were left disheartened and dejected. Many of the pro-choice campaigners were seen crying and comforting each other.
Some of the pro-choice campaigners even lobbed missiles and started fires to show their anger against the Argentine senate’s decision to not fully legalize abortion.
The pro-choice campaigners have tried for years to get the legalization of abortion bills passed in Argentina, a country where the population is Roman catholic.
When the President of Argentina, Mauricio Macri, who opposes abortion, called on the Congress to have a vote on whether to legalize abortion or not, which just somehow got passed in the lower house – the efforts of the pro-choice campaigners gained momentum.
Almost 43 women have been thought to have died in the last calendar year after they received illegal abortions.
Among all the countries in Latin America, only Cuba and Uruguay have legalized abortion for all.
