Wigan Athletic finished Manchester City’s expectations of a clean sweep of trophies with a dazzling upset in their 5th round tie of the FA Cup.
The League One side survived constant pressure from the Premier League leaders, in the end profiting by Fabian Delph’s questionable first-half red card when Will Grigg struck 11 minutes from time.
The striker’s low finish topped a night of show at the DW Stadium, with City’s Fernandinho squandering a fine possibility in no time before Delph was rejected for a substantial test on Max Power.
The incident prompted a heated argument between City manager Pep Guardiola and opposite number Paul Cook in the tunnel at half-time.
What’s more, there were unedifying scenes at full-time, as well, with City striker Sergio Aguero involved in an exchange with one of the numerous home fans who attacked the pitch.
City tossed everything at Wigan, both before and after Grigg’s goal – a guided shot from 20 yards – and Danilo’s header was appreciatively held by Christian Walton in the game’s last attack.
