Christensen mistake helps Barcelona to salvage a draw

Lionel Messi’s first goal in 9 Champions League matches against Chelsea gave Barcelona a very important away goal as they rode their fortunes to salvage a draw in the first leg of their round of 16 tie at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues had subdued Messi, and Willian had struck the frame of the goal twice in the first half of the game before a fine low finish from the edge of the box made it third time fortunate for the Brazilian and gave Conte’s side a well-deserved lead after 62 mins.

Barcelona had scarcely threatened but a misplaced pass from Christensen gave Iniesta the chance to find Messi, who then end his 730 mins dry spell against Chelsea with a brilliantly placed left-foot drive 15 mins from time.

It was barbarous on the hosts after an extraordinary show – but gives Barca the benefit of an away goal for the send leg at the Nou Camp on Wednesday, 14 March.

The outcome means none of the English clubs have lost in their round of 16 first-leg ties up until now.

Liverpool beat Porto 5-0, Manchester City vanquished Basel 4-0, Tottenham drew 2-2 at Juventus. Manchester United visit Sevilla on Wednesday.
