Chelsea makes Kepa Arrizabalaga the most expensive goalkeeper

Chelsea made Kepa Arrizabalaga the most expensive goalkeeper ever, as they signed him for £71 million from Athletic Bilbao.

The 23-year-old goalkeeper, Kepa arrives at the blue half of London after the release clause in his contract was met by the Blues.

Kepa arrives at Stamford bridge, surpassing Liverpool’s signing of Alisson’s from Roma for a fee of around £66.8 million.

He signed a seven-year contract with the Blues and will replace the Belgium no.1, Thibaut Courtois, who is undergoing his medical at Real Madrid.

He is the number two goalkeeping choice for the Spanish international team, just behind Manchester United’s David de Gea.

Kepa arrives at Stamford Bridge after two seasons with the Spanish side Athletic Bilbao and has featured in 53 La Liga games and one international cap.

Kepa became Chelsea’s club record transfer after they surpassed the £60 million that they spent on Spanish striker Alvaro Morata in July 2017.

Amid interest from Real Madrid, in January, he had signed a new contract that would have kept him at Bilbao until 2025.

Kepa is the second pivotal player to leave Bilbao this year, after the France defender, Aymeric Laportewas signed by signed for Manchester City.

A world record for 20days

Before Alisson’s move to Luverpool from Roma in July, Buffon held the record for being the most expensive goalkeeper. The record stayed for 17 years.

Buffon left Juventus this summer to join the French side PSG.

Alisson’s record stood for 20 days while Buffons for 6335 days.
